New Legislative Proposals on Martial Law and Mobilization

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has formally submitted two draft laws to the Verkhovna Rada, aimed at prolonging both martial law and general mobilization across the country. Draft law No. 15197 proposes an extension of martial law, while draft law No. 15198 focuses on continuing the mobilization effort. Both documents, dated April 27, seek to extend these measures from May 4, 2026, for an additional 90 days.

These proposals come as Ukraine continues to navigate the ongoing war with Russia, which began with the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. The current extensions of martial law and mobilization were last signed by the president on January 26, 2023, and are set to expire on May 4, 2026. The new bills aim to maintain the country’s defense capabilities and national security amid the protracted conflict.

Why Extending These Measures Matters

Renewing martial law and mobilization is seen as a critical step for Ukraine to sustain its military readiness and strategic resilience. Approval by the parliament would signal the government’s continued commitment to countering external threats and ensuring stability in the defense sector during wartime.

These legislative initiatives are designed to safeguard the nation’s security as the conflict persists.

As Ukraine prepares to extend martial law and mobilization efforts, the situation remains tense, especially with warnings of a possible large-scale Russian offensive.
