In an interview with Sky News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted a severe shortage of missiles needed to effectively protect the country from Russian ballistic strikes. He noted that Russia fired 40 ballistic missiles at Kyiv within a single hour last week, threatening the safety of Ukrainian cities. Zelensky also tied Ukraine's air defense shortfall to the Middle East conflict, stating: "Now I understand the roots of the problem. I see the relationships between the US and Middle Eastern countries, and I realize that Washington is focused on the Middle East. Because of that, we face this challenge, and it is a major problem for us." The president is actively negotiating with the United States—specifically President Donald Trump—and other allies regarding financial and military support, as well as stronger sanctions against Russia.
Donald Trump confirmed that the US is prepared to grant Ukraine licenses to manufacture Patriot air defense systems. Additionally, Ukraine will receive licenses to produce French SCALP missiles, AASM bombs, and Aster 30 missiles, which will be made jointly with Italy. Zelensky also met with US representatives at NATO to discuss key topics related to air defense systems such as Patriot and drone agreements.
