Kyiv Under Massive Attack: 21 Dead, Nearly 100 Injured
Russia Launches Devastating Strike on Ukraine
According to ХВИЛЯ: On the night of July 2, Russia conducted a large-scale assault on Ukraine, with a particular focus on the capital city of Kyiv. The attack, occurring on the 1,590th day of the war, claimed 21 lives and left nearly 100 people seeking medical attention. A nine-story residential building was among the primary targets, hit by a missile that destroyed 64 apartments. Three people died at the scene, while rescue teams managed to pull 17 survivors from the rubble.
In the capital, over 130 residential buildings sustained damage from the strike. Ukraine's air defense forces successfully intercepted 48 missiles and 476 drones of various types. The assault was not limited to Kyiv alone, but also targeted the Kyiv region, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Sumy, and communities in the Dnipropetrovsk area. On the same day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck another Russian oil refinery.
Ukrainian President's Response
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the situation in his evening speech, stating:
“Russia no longer has any argument to justify its war other than its ballistic missiles and this kind of terror.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
He emphasized that to reliably protect Ukrainian lives, the country needs its own production of air defense systems: “To truly and reliably protect lives, we need our own production.” Zelenskyy also highlighted the urgent need for sufficient supplies of anti-ballistic systems and faster development of a domestic defense shield in Europe. He noted a current shortage of Patriot systems. One of the key outcomes of the upcoming NATO summit, he argued, must be strengthening air defense capabilities.
The president thanked nations providing assistance through the PURL program and expressed hope for a positive response from Donald Trump regarding the supply of missiles for Patriot systems. He also confirmed that Ukraine's long-range strikes continue to target Russian oil facilities and military production sites. During a conversation with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, the two leaders discussed bilateral defense cooperation and further diplomatic steps. Ukraine's goal remains unchanged: to force Russia to recognize the necessity of peace.
This massive missile attack underscores the ongoing threat from Russia and the critical need to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities. Zelenskyy's calls for domestic production of air defense systems signal a strategic shift toward enhancing security. The situation demands active international support, especially ahead of the NATO summit, where strengthening air defense may become a top priority for Ukraine's partners.
In light of the recent devastating attacks, the need for enhanced air defense systems has become increasingly urgent. As highlighted by President Zelenskyy, Ukraine is calling for the strengthening of its defense capabilities, a sentiment echoed in discussions around NATO's commitment to boost air defenses in response to ongoing threats.
