Ballistic Missile Attack Strikes Kyiv During High-Level U.S. Congressional Meeting
During a meeting with American lawmakers, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed that Russian forces launched a ballistic missile strike on Kyiv on September 24. The attack coincided with discussions about the Lindsey Graham bill and the expansion of sanctions against Russia. The strike resulted in two fatalities and eight injuries, with missile debris causing fires and extensive damage across multiple districts of the capital. Warehouses, government buildings, private homes, and structures near a maternity hospital were among the affected sites.
Urgent Call for Enhanced Defensive Capabilities
Meeting with U.S. Congressmen Brian Fitzpatrick, Michael Quigley, Marcy Kaptur, Jared Golden, Joe Wilson, and Gregory Meeks, Zelensky stressed the urgent need to bolster Ukraine's defenses against ballistic missile threats, highlighting the importance of supplying missile interceptors. He remarked:
"Today, Russia launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv precisely as we discussed the Lindsey Graham legislation and the imperative to intensify sanctions. This war will not end without sustained pressure on Russia." Volodymyr Zelensky
Following a bipartisan revision of the sanctions bill against Russia introduced in the U.S. Senate on July 15 and supported by the House of Representatives on September 17, President Donald Trump signed it into law on September 19. The legislation passed with 262 votes in favor and 159 against. Zelensky emphasized that every new Russian strike reflects the ongoing lack of comprehensive pressure on the aggressor:
"Each attack continues because the pressure on Russia remains incomplete, and Moscow believes it can persist with ballistic missile terror." Volodymyr Zelensky
He further noted the United States now has a critical opportunity to respond decisively: "The U.S. must supply ballistic missile interceptors to protect lives and fully implement sanctions targeting Russia and its enablers. I thank both parties for their commitment to help safeguard lives."
Meanwhile, Russian forces launched a series of nighttime assaults on Ukraine using Zircon anti-ship missiles, Iskander-M ballistic missiles, and 282 drones of various types, striking 13 locations. This ongoing aggression underlines Russia’s determination, as noted by Zelensky, to continue employing ballistic missiles against Ukraine.
This situation highlights the vital role of international support and the urgent need to strengthen Ukraine’s defense systems. Given the persistent attacks, Zelensky’s appeals to the United States for missile interceptors and tougher sanctions are increasingly critical.
