Ukrainian President’s Visit to Ankara

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has landed in Ankara to attend the NATO summit, where he plans to hold discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump is scheduled for July 8. Ukraine’s negotiating position has been bolstered by recent battlefield gains and the arrival of billions in financial aid from the European Union.

During his time in Ankara, Ukrainian officials aim to address cooperation with the United States, including a delayed agreement on drone production. Kyiv is seeking more favorable terms for collaboration, though European allies remain cautious about predicting the outcome given Trump’s unpredictability. Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg they do not expect Trump to agree to stronger pressure on Russia through new sanctions or a resumption of military aid.

Talks and Their Significance

At last year’s NATO summit, Zelenskyy lacked confirmation of a meeting with Trump until the very last moment. Ahead of the current summit, CNN reported that the U.S. president traveled to Ankara in an extremely negative mood, voicing complaints about allies’ defense spending and NATO’s role.

Donald Trump remarked: ‘Zelenskyy is doing quite well in the war with Russia.’

This indicates a degree of support from the American president, but it does not guarantee concrete actions in the future.

As such, Zelenskyy’s participation in the NATO summit and his talks with Trump could mark a pivotal moment in U.S.-Ukraine relations amid ongoing regional security challenges. Strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the United States—particularly regarding military assistance and sanctions policy toward Russia—remains a key factor for future stability in Eastern Europe. This summit comes at a critical time as Ukraine continues to defend against Russian aggression while navigating complex international diplomatic dynamics.
