President Zelensky Praises US Decision Amid Ukraine’s Energy Crisis
President Volodymyr Zelensky has applauded the US State Department’s authorization for Ukraine to acquire 500 PAC-3 interceptors designed for Patriot missile systems. Despite this positive step, the delivery of these interceptors is expected to take several years. Zelensky is urging international partners to urgently find solutions that provide immediate assistance, as Russian forces continue daily strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Recent reports indicate that over 30 Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid have occurred in just the past two weeks of October. In response, Ukraine has formally requested a winter support package from the United States, which includes a monthly supply of 100 Patriot interceptors. The President highlighted that sufficient PAC-3 interceptors are currently available in stockpiles across the US, Europe, and other allied nations.
The Critical Need for Swift Defensive Support
Zelensky emphasized the significant impact that providing PAC-3 interceptors could have on strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
“The US State Department’s strong decision to allow Ukraine to purchase interceptors for the Patriots against Russian ballistic missiles is highly meaningful. Five hundred PAC-3 interceptors could form a highly effective defense package this winter. However, it has been made clear that deliveries may only begin in several years,” said Volodymyr Zelensky.
He stressed the urgency of equipping Ukraine with these defensive assets without delay.
“We ask our American partners to find solutions now, at a time when the threat is real and there is an immediate need for PAC-3 interceptors,” Zelensky urged. The President reiterated that Russia has launched more than 30 strikes on critical segments of Ukraine’s energy network in just the last half of October.
Zelensky pointed out that the 500 interceptors would be sufficient to shield Ukrainian airspace over the coming months, a crucial factor for Ukraine’s strong position in ongoing negotiations. He called for decisions that guarantee protection not in the distant future, but precisely when the threat is active—"when Russia is killing and destroying."
Given the relentless attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure, Zelensky’s call for urgent delivery of defense systems like PAC-3 underscores the country’s precarious situation. With the actual supply of these interceptors potentially delayed for years, the need for rapid international response is more vital than ever. This situation highlights Ukraine’s strategic reliance on global support to maintain its defense, especially as the winter season approaches, increasing the vulnerability of its power grid to further assaults.
As Ukraine continues to grapple with the ongoing energy crisis exacerbated by Russian attacks, the need for effective defense systems has never been more pressing.
