Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Statement

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has responded to calls from French President Emmanuel Macron for dialogue with Russia. This exchange follows an unannounced visit to Moscow by Macron's chief diplomatic advisor, Emmanuel Bonne, who held confidential talks with Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov. Zelenskyy noted he had a conversation with Macron, during which they discussed details of their meetings in Abu Dhabi and shared information about the advisor's trip. The situation highlights the complex diplomatic balancing act between pursuing dialogue and maintaining pressure on Moscow.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of continuing dialogue but simultaneously stressed the necessity of applying pressure on Russia. He stated,

"In my view, we need to build not just dialogue with the Russians, but pressure. We must have arguments in hand to pressure the Russians"
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also noted that otherwise, Russia might not respect European countries, and, in his words, they derive satisfaction from that. Zelenskyy also announced a further conversation on this topic in Munich.

Trilateral Consultations and Next Steps

A recent round of trilateral consultations between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia took place in the UAE, which appears to be part of a broader process aimed at settling relations. A further conversation is planned in Munich, where, according to Zelenskyy, he and Macron will be able to discuss the results of the meetings and next steps more substantively.

The importance of dialogue between Ukraine and France, as well as between Ukraine and Russia, underscores the international community's ongoing efforts to find ways to stabilize the situation in the region. The negotiations occurring at various levels indicate an intensification of diplomatic efforts and attempts to reach a compromise, despite the complexity of relations between the countries. The noted possibility of further discussion in Munich could also become an important step in forming a strategic approach to resolving the conflict.
