Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Interview
In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined his stance on security guarantees from the US and EU, as well as on potential negotiations with Russia. A planned trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia is scheduled for March 5-6 in Abu Dhabi, though the lack of updated information on the venue currently casts doubt on whether it will proceed.
Zelenskyy noted that while Ukraine has security assurances from the United States, the American side is willing to formalize them only as part of an agreement with Russia.
"I disagree with this, but that is the reality," stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The President also pointed to a ready protocol with European partners that remains unsigned. He said agreements for Ukraine's reconstruction exist but can only be implemented after peace is established. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is adhering to a 20-point plan, which includes issues of territorial control.
Stance on Territorial Exchanges
The President also expressed his firm position against trading territory.
"The Americans are thinking about a land swap, the Russians want our withdrawal. An exchange is not in our interests," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He stressed that Moscow would need to expend significant effort to control the territories Ukraine has left behind, questioning why the country should trade one part of its homeland for another. These security discussions occur against the backdrop of a protracted war where territorial integrity is a paramount concern for Kyiv.
Zelenskyy's statements underscore the complex situation Ukraine faces as it strives to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity within the framework of international diplomacy. His firm rejection of land swaps and his comments on the pending security pacts demonstrate Ukraine's determination to uphold its national interests, despite pressure from international partners. The uncertainty surrounding the planned talks further highlights the challenges ahead for diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
