Statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
During a private meeting with journalists, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy identified the creation of a domestic anti-ballistic missile system as one of the most formidable challenges facing the nation's defense-industrial complex (OPK). He stressed that Ukraine currently faces a shortage of such missiles and must develop its own production capabilities. Zelenskyy emphasized that the country cannot rely solely on foreign arms supplies, as global conflicts, including the war in the Middle East, can create new reasons for delays in deliveries.
“For various reasons, we cannot count on always being given missiles for Patriot systems. Right now there is war in the Middle East; later, there could be another reason. We must build our own independent defense industry in all aspects. Essentially, that is what we are doing,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.
He further highlighted that the prolonged conflict in the Middle East poses a threat to Ukraine's weapons procurement, prompting the country to prepare its own response to this risk.
Additionally, Zelenskyy reported that there are currently no signals of weapons supplies being halted under the PURL program and noted a significant ramp-up in domestic drone production.
“There are relevant ideas. It is very difficult – perhaps one of the toughest tasks, but it must be done,” he added.
Ukraine's Strategic Security Goals
The president's remarks underscore Ukraine's strategic security objective: to reduce dependence on imported weapons and develop its own manufacturing base. This approach is seen as vital for Ukraine's long-term security, allowing it to better adapt to shifts in the global security landscape and ensure reliable protection against emerging threats. Developing this capability is a critical step for a nation actively defending its sovereignty against a larger aggressor.
In this context, the development of anti-ballistic missiles and the expansion of drone production are becoming key elements in strengthening the country's defensive capabilities.
As Ukraine faces the daunting task of establishing its own anti-ballistic missile capabilities, the nation's strategic focus on self-sufficiency in defense is becoming increasingly apparent. This commitment aligns with the recent developments in Ukraine's aerial warfare strategy, particularly its emphasis on drone technology.
