Outcomes of the Trilateral Talks in Abu Dhabi
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has detailed the results of recent trilateral talks held in Abu Dhabi. For the first time, a vision for ending the war was discussed openly. The meeting also covered technical issues and resulted in the signing of a declaration with the 'Coalition of the Willing' regarding security guarantees. Zelenskyy noted, however, that the core challenge remains differing views on how the war should end, particularly concerning territorial matters.
Comments from the U.S. President
U.S. President Donald Trump also commented on the negotiations. On January 29, he stated that he had personally appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, asking him to refrain from attacking Ukraine for a certain period. According to Trump, the sides are losing approximately 25,000 people each month. Furthermore, Trump declined to sign a prepared multi-billion dollar agreement concerning Ukraine's post-war reconstruction.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that any compromise in negotiations must be mutual.
'When we talk about compromise, my understanding is this: compromise is about what two sides must do, not just about one Ukrainian side and a Ukrainian compromise. Although it is not very fair to seek a compromise between the victim and the aggressor,' he remarked. The President also emphasized a readiness for compromises that lead to a genuine end to the war, provided they do not involve changes to Ukraine's territorial integrity.
These talks in Abu Dhabi underscore the critical role of international dialogue in the context of the war in Ukraine. The discussions highlight that questions of territorial integrity remain central to any peace negotiation. Ukraine's stance on compromise demonstrates a desire for a peaceful resolution, though Russia's reaction to these statements remains unclear. The ongoing conflict is a major geopolitical crisis, and the subsequent steps taken by the international community and their impact on the negotiation process could shape the next phases of the situation in the region.
