Preparations for the Heating Season

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced the start of preparations for the next winter heating season, following a trip to the Zakarpattia region. He highlighted the significant challenges posed by the partial blocking of financial assistance from the European Union, which complicates the country's efforts to meet its winter readiness needs. This comes as Ukraine continues to defend its energy infrastructure from Russian attacks, making resilience a top priority.

Speaking at a Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Zakarpattia, Zelenskyy outlined a core scenario for accumulating natural gas in underground storage facilities. According to this plan, Ukraine intends to build a reserve of 14.6 billion cubic meters of gas before the heating season begins.

“We got through this winter thanks to all our people who work for our state, for their communities, who are professionals in energy companies and in utility services.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The President stressed that preparations for the coming winter are already underway, despite the difficulties caused by the frozen European funds: “We have already started preparing for the next winter. We must not lose time, even though it is difficult to provide for all needs due to the blocking of European funds for Ukraine.”

Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of local communities actively engaging with international partners to explain why blocking support ultimately benefits Russia.

“It is important that our communities are active, that they tell partners at their level why blocking support for us, for Ukraine, is purely working for Russia.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

He noted that these blocked funds were intended for reconstruction, strengthening energy system defenses, and developing alternative power generation. In the current situation, ensuring energy independence remains a critical goal for Ukraine.

The Critical Need for Dialogue with International Partners

Preparing for the next heating season is critically important for Ukraine, especially amid the ongoing war and instability caused by external factors. The blockade of EU financial assistance could significantly impact the country's ability to ensure adequate energy security and stability during the winter months.

Proactive communication by local communities with international partners could be key to overcoming these challenges and securing the vital support Ukraine requires.
