Ukraine Aims to Build Its Own European Missile Defense System Within a Year, Says Zelenskyy

Україна планує створити власну систему протиповітряної оборони за європейським зразком протягом найближчого року, заявив Зеленський.

Blueprint for a European Missile Shield

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans to develop a domestically produced European missile defense system in collaboration with European manufacturers and nations. The primary goal of this initiative is to reduce Ukraine's reliance on Western-supplied air defense systems. Zelenskyy expressed his intention to implement these plans within a year.

In an interview with journalist Oksana Sokolyanska, published by the outlet 'Glavcom', the president noted he is in talks with key European partners.

'I am meeting with manufacturers because my idea is that we should have a European anti-ballistic system. We are speaking with several states and working in this direction,' he said.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the objective is to create their own system within a year.

System Components and Partner Collaboration

Discussing the system's components, the president remarked:

'This is realistic. It is very difficult, but the question is about the components. I believe one component we see today—the radar issue—can be solved. I am negotiating with countries. We just need to see what will work best. And another issue is missiles. Missiles for the corresponding systems.'

Zelenskyy also pointed out that Ukraine has not yet discussed the matter with all potential partners but has already held negotiations with key countries possessing advanced air defense capabilities.

  • These are countries with developed air defense systems.
  • They may not be anti-ballistic, but they still have their own domestically produced systems.

The need to develop indigenous defense capabilities has become particularly urgent due to potential threats to weapons supplies to Ukraine linked to the conflict involving Iran. Kyiv, in cooperation with international partners, continues to work on strengthening its defensive capabilities. This move comes as Ukraine seeks to bolster its long-term security and industrial self-sufficiency amid ongoing regional instability.

The creation of an anti-ballistic system represents a significant step for Ukraine in enhancing national security and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. In light of current threats arising from geopolitical conflicts, intensified cooperation with European countries could positively impact Ukraine's defense posture. This also underscores Kyiv's ambition to develop its own defense technologies and manufacturing, which could contribute to greater stability and security in the region.

As Ukraine accelerates its efforts to establish a domestic missile defense system, the urgency of ensuring a stable supply of weapons becomes increasingly critical. Recent developments in the Iran conflict highlight potential risks to Ukraine's arms supply, emphasizing the need for self-reliance in defense capabilities amidst geopolitical tensions.
