Key Issues Debated in Daily Briefing
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held his daily operational meeting, where critical issues including airspace protection and the heating situation in Kyiv were addressed. The President expressed concern, stating that more than 1,200 residential buildings in the capital remain without heating. These infrastructure challenges are compounded by ongoing Russian attacks on energy and civilian targets.
Zelenskyy stressed the urgent need to improve the performance of the Air Force, remarking:
“I consider the work of the Air Force in some regions of Ukraine to be unsatisfactory... decisions must be implemented immediately for more effective downing of 'Shahed' drones”(Volodymyr Zelenskyy). His comments highlight the pressure on Ukraine's air defenses against sustained Russian drone and missile assaults.
Heating Supply and Infrastructure Attacks
The meeting also covered the heating supply crisis and a significant increase in attacks on railway infrastructure during January. The Prime Minister reported on the expansion of a 'warmth package' program for the population, aimed at supporting people affected by the lack of heat. Zelenskyy noted:
“The situation in Kyiv remains difficult. More support is needed for people in such buildings”(Volodymyr Zelenskyy).
The heating crisis in Kyiv and the performance of the Air Force are causing serious concern within government structures, given their impact on civilian safety and social stability. The need for immediate measures to improve these areas underscores the acute challenges the country faces amid war and an energy crisis. The implementation of support programs for the population also emphasizes the critical importance of social policy during this difficult period.
