Strategic Meeting Focuses on Small-Scale Anti-Drone Defense
On January 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the creation of a new, separate command within the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This decision was made following a strategic meeting on developing small-scale anti-drone air defense. The new command will be exclusively responsible for counter-drone operations. The nation's leadership and military officials have approved the command's structure and new approaches to managing its forces.
Key Objectives to Strengthen National Protection
Three primary objectives have been set to enhance Ukraine's defense against Russian drones:
- The first priority is to urgently bolster protection against Russian drones in Kherson, Nikopol, and the border communities of the Sumy region.
- The second task involves scaling up the countermeasures against 'Shahed' and other Russian strike drones, with plans to deploy additional defensive lines and positions.
- The third objective is to systematize and disseminate the successful combat experience of individual units across all of Ukraine's Defense Forces.
Zelenskyy stated that Russia has essentially created a constant 'safari' against people, striking residential buildings, infrastructure, and civilian transport. He emphasized the necessity of increasing protection and retaliatory actions. This move reflects the evolving nature of modern warfare, where drone technology plays an increasingly central role.
This initiative underscores the growing threat posed by drones in the conflict and Ukraine's need to refine its defensive strategies. The establishment of a dedicated counter-drone command could be a significant step in strengthening military capability and protecting the civilian population. The outlined tasks highlight a focus on critical regions most vulnerable to attacks, which may help adapt defensive operations to the new realities of the battlefield.
