Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Letter to U.S. President Donald Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sent a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump warning that Ukraine faces a severe shortage of air defense systems, particularly those capable of intercepting ballistic missiles. The letter was delivered to the White House, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and other members of Congress by Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna. In his appeal, Zelenskyy requests the supply of Patriot PAC-3 missiles and additional air defense platforms.
Zelenskyy stresses that Ukraine depends on its partners for support, and when it comes to defending against ballistic missiles, it relies almost entirely on the United States.
“When it comes to protection from missiles, we rely on our friends. When it comes to protection from ballistic missiles, we rely almost exclusively on the United States,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The president also highlights that the current pace of deliveries under the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program does not match the real threat the country faces. “I ask for your help in protecting the Ukrainian sky from Russian missiles,” Zelenskyy added.
The Situation in Ukraine and Threats from Russia
Recent events underscore the gravity of the situation. On the night of May 24, Russian forces launched 90 missiles and approximately 600 drones at Ukraine. In response, on May 25, Russia announced another series of massive strikes on Kyiv. During a phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov outlined plans to strike Ukrainian decision-making centers and urged Washington to evacuate the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv.
Zelenskyy emphasizes the critical need for Patriot PAC-3 missiles and other systems:
“On behalf of the Ukrainian people, I respectfully ask the President and Congress of the United States to remain engaged. And to help us obtain this vital tool of protection against Russian terror,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He also expressed confidence that most Russian missiles can be stopped, but the situation remains difficult, especially regarding ballistic missile defense.
Zelenskyy’s appeal highlights the dire situation in Ukraine, where the threat from Russian forces remains extreme. The danger of large-scale missile attacks underscores the urgent need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense system to protect the country’s population and infrastructure. Global attention on Ukraine’s plight continues to grow, and support from international partners—particularly the United States—is crucial to bolstering Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
As Ukraine faces increasing threats from Russian missile attacks, the situation escalates with reports of over 3,170 drones and 74 missiles launched in just one week. This alarming rise in aggression highlights the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems, making Zelenskyy's appeal for support even more critical.
