Ukrainian President's Visit to Azerbaijan
Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's president, traveled to Azerbaijan for a meeting with President Ilham Aliyev in Baku. During their discussions, the two leaders signed six bilateral documents covering cooperation in security and defense industry, energy, economics, and humanitarian matters. This marked Zelensky's first visit to Azerbaijan since the full-scale war began in Ukraine.
Bilateral Cooperation
The talks explored joint military production as part of broader collaboration. Zelensky also expressed Ukraine's willingness to host trilateral negotiations involving the United States and Russia on Azerbaijani soil, provided Moscow is ready for diplomacy. Kyiv is seeking advisory support from Baku in preparing peace talks to end the war.
President Zelensky stated: 'It is very important for Ukraine that Russia finds the strength to end this unjust war.'
Azerbaijan has already supported Ukraine by supplying energy packages during winter and hosting over 500 Ukrainian children. Additionally, many Azerbaijani students choose to study at Ukrainian universities. As part of the partnership, Ukraine is sharing its expertise in air defense across three areas:
- Countries in the Middle East and Gulf region,
- The European Union,
- Azerbaijan.
Both sides reaffirmed mutual support for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and agreed to boost trade between the nations.
This visit underscores the strengthening ties between Ukraine and Azerbaijan, particularly amid growing military and economic cooperation. The signed agreements could significantly impact regional security and enhance Ukraine's position in negotiations to resolve the conflict with Russia. Collaboration with Azerbaijan also opens new avenues for energy security and humanitarian initiatives, which are critical during wartime.
As Ukraine seeks to strengthen its international alliances, the recent visit of President Zelensky to Azerbaijan highlights the growing cooperation in security and energy.
