Ukrainian President Meets Belgian Prime Minister

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in Brussels on June 18. The discussions centered on continued support for Ukraine, with key points including:

  • bolstering air defense capabilities;
  • potential additional contributions to the PURL program;
  • preparation of a major new defense package.

Belgium’s prime minister briefed Zelenskyy on a forthcoming defense package designed to back Ukraine’s efforts to defend itself.

F-16 Fighter Jet Deliveries

A major focus of the meeting was the timeline and roadmap for Belgium to supply F-16 fighter jets. President Zelenskyy stated:

“We paid special attention to the schedule and timeline for the delivery of F-16s from Belgium. The first shipments will arrive this year, and Ukraine expects subsequent jets to follow without delay.”

The first F-16s are expected to be delivered within the current year, with Belgium planning to transfer seven jets to Ukraine by the end of 2026. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken confirmed the pledge of seven F-16s.

The leaders also reviewed joint projects under the SAFE initiative and discussed Ukraine’s path toward European integration. President Zelenskyy thanked Belgium for backing the opening of the first negotiation cluster for both Ukraine and Moldova. Additionally, the conversation touched on tightening sanctions against Russia’s shadow fleet.

Zelenskyy also briefed De Wever on his engagements at the G7 summit and work within the Drone Deals framework, proposing that Belgium sign an agreement under that initiative. Notably, Ukrainian pilots are currently training to navigate without stable GPS signals due to the threat of Russian electronic warfare.

This meeting underscores the critical role of international support for Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression. Successful execution of the F-16 delivery plan and other defense initiatives could significantly enhance Ukraine’s military strength, boosting not only national security but also its integration into European structures. The active involvement of Belgium and other Western allies in providing military aid reflects growing solidarity in upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As Ukraine continues to strengthen its defense capabilities, the recent discussions between Zelenskyy and De Wever highlight the importance of international partnerships. In this context, a new initiative focused on drone technology has been launched by Latvia and Ukraine, aiming to enhance military cooperation and support Ukraine's defense efforts against ongoing threats.
