Ukrainian President’s Trip to Brussels
On June 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Brussels, where he held talks with King Philippe of Belgium and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever. The discussions focused heavily on Russian attacks targeting civilian infrastructure—including damage to the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Leaders also addressed the need to bolster anti-air capabilities, potential additional contributions to the PURL initiative, and the advancement of joint projects under the SAFE framework.
Ramstein Contact Group Meeting Convened
The Ramstein-format contact group meeting kicked off on the same day. Zelenskyy stressed that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is relying heavily on missile strikes, particularly ballistic ones.
“Ukraine possesses tools strong enough to push Russia toward a point where diplomacy becomes the only remaining option,” he stated.Accordingly, the president emphasized the urgent need to enhance Ukraine’s anti-ballistic missile defenses.
Additional topics on the agenda included:
- tightening sanctions against Russia;
- diplomatic engagement with international partners;
- elevating Europe’s role in negotiation processes;
- backing Ukraine’s European integration;
- and bilateral defense cooperation.
These issues remain critical given the ongoing security challenges in the region.
Zelenskyy’s visit to Brussels underscores Ukraine’s diplomatic push to secure sustained international support amid its protracted conflict with Russia. The focus on strengthening air defenses and expanding sanctions reflects Kyiv’s drive to fortify its military capabilities and solidify global backing. Engaging European partners continues to be a cornerstone of Ukraine’s strategy for national security and deeper integration into European institutions.
In light of the ongoing discussions regarding air defense and international collaboration, it's important to note that similar themes were addressed during Zelenskyy's recent talks with E3 leaders in London. The emphasis on Russian military losses and the urgent need for enhanced defense capabilities underscores the gravity of the situation and the coordinated efforts among European allies to support Ukraine's security needs.
