Address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

On March 31, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a speech marking the anniversary of Bucha's liberation from Russian occupation. In his address, he honored the memory of fallen Ukrainians and called for Russia to be held accountable for its war crimes. The town of Bucha became a global symbol of the war's brutality after Russian forces withdrew in early April 2022.

Zelenskyy stated that the world learned of Bucha by witnessing the horrors perpetrated by the Russian occupiers.

“The world saw the Ukrainian people brutally killed by Russian occupiers on the streets of Bucha. They saw our people tortured in basements. They saw those shot on the roads. They saw the bodies of adults and children found in graves in Bucha. Everyone saw the terror that Russia and its aggression bring,” the president emphasized.

Zelenskyy added that on this fourth anniversary of Bucha's liberation, it is crucial to remember those who were murdered and tortured.

“We remember and will not forget what the enemy has done. Every Russian murderer, executioner, and terrorist must answer for every crime committed against our people,” he stressed.

The president also expressed his condolences: “Eternal memory to everyone whose life was taken by Russia, to all who perished in Bucha and across Ukraine at the hands of the Russian occupiers.”

Traffic Restrictions in Kyiv and the Kyiv Region

Temporary traffic restrictions were imposed in Kyiv and the surrounding region on March 31 due to security measures involving foreign dignitaries. These measures were implemented to ensure safety during a significant commemorative event in Ukraine. Such high-level visits underscore the continued international focus on Ukraine's defense and the pursuit of justice.

President Zelenskyy's speech underscores the importance of remembering the victims of aggression and the necessity of holding perpetrators of war crimes accountable. These events remain a powerful symbol of Ukraine's struggle for its independence and territorial integrity. The traffic restrictions in the capital region highlight the serious security protocols enacted amid ongoing international support for Ukraine and the commemoration of those lost.

As the world reflects on the significance of Bucha's liberation, it's important to note the ongoing international support for Ukraine. Recently, Kaja Kallas, the Prime Minister of Estonia, visited Kyiv to mark this anniversary. Her visit highlights the European Union's commitment to standing with Ukraine in its fight for justice and accountability in the face of aggression.
