President Holds Talks with Zakarpattia's Hungarian Community

On April 9, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with representatives of the Hungarian community in the Zakarpattia region. This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to address the concerns of national minorities within Ukraine, a significant issue given the country's diverse population and the pressures of war. During the event, he presented state awards to military personnel and discussed key issues related to the economy, education, and rehabilitation.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Hungarian community and military personnel. The discussions covered several topics:

  • Ensuring the educational needs of national communities to be taught in their native language;
  • The role of local self-government in contributing to the state budget;
  • Creating conditions for the return of Ukrainians who have gone abroad;
  • Utilizing the balneological resources of Zakarpattia Oblast for the rehabilitation of soldiers and veterans.

During the event, President Zelenskyy also presented state awards to servicemen of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade of Zakarpattia. They were awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi III Class, Orders for Courage III Class, and Medals for Military Service to Ukraine. A UAV operator from the 1st Separate Center of Unmanned Systems received the Order for Courage III Class. Furthermore, the Order for Merit III Class (posthumously) was presented to the wife of the late former First Deputy Chairman and Deputy of the Zakarpattia Regional Council, Yosyp Borto, who passed away in November 2023.

The Significance of Interethnic Dialogue

This meeting continues the President's efforts to increase attention to the needs of national minorities in Ukraine. Previously, Volodymyr Zelenskyy also presented state awards to representatives of the Crimean Tatar people.

The President's meeting with the Hungarian community in Zakarpattia underscores the importance of interethnic dialogue in Ukraine, especially within the context of war and economic challenges.

Discussions on education, local governance, and military rehabilitation demonstrate the government's aim to support and develop national minorities, which can contribute to stability in the region. The honoring of servicemen also reflects recognition of their service and merits amid the ongoing conflict in the country.

The emphasis on supporting military personnel and addressing the needs of national minorities reflects a broader strategy by President Zelenskyy. In a similar context, he recently met with Commander Prokopenko to discuss initiatives in the Donetsk region, highlighting the government's commitment to regional stability and security.
