Ukrainian President’s Statement
Following the NATO summit in Ankara, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported an increase in backing for Ukraine’s NATO membership among alliance member states. He highlighted that discussions on Ukraine joining NATO have been ongoing for years, but the number of supportive voices has now risen. According to Zelenskyy, the summit acknowledged the combat capabilities of Ukraine’s Armed Forces and the strength of its defense industry. This marks a notable shift in the alliance’s stance toward Kyiv.
International Leaders Respond
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also confirmed that the Ankara summit demonstrated a new level of unity among allies, with outcomes exceeding expectations. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine’s defense-industrial complex is now on par with NATO standards and ranks among the world’s best. The summit served as a significant diplomatic success for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, offering Ankara a chance to reset relations with the United States after years of tension.
“Everyone stresses that the alliance’s defense capabilities will only benefit from Ukraine’s inclusion,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Meanwhile, The Telegraph reports that certain forces still keep Ukraine outside the alliance, while some nations psychologically view Ukraine as already part of NATO. Zelenskyy underscored the respect other countries hold for Ukraine’s military and tech firms: “Our army is respected by all, Ukraine is respected by all, our technology companies are respected by all, and they would like to strengthen themselves with Ukraine.” These remarks reflect growing international support and recognition of Ukraine’s military and technological achievements.
Zelenskyy’s statements underscore the importance of international backing for Ukraine’s NATO aspirations. The rising number of member-state supporters may signal a shift in the geopolitical landscape and a reassessment of Ukraine’s regional role. However, despite these positive signals, factors still keep Ukraine outside NATO, requiring continued diplomatic efforts to achieve this goal.
The growing support for Ukraine's NATO membership is not the only significant development in the region. As President Zelenskyy prepares for his upcoming meeting with Trump, he has also announced the establishment of an anti-ballistic missile coalition, which aims to further enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities. This coalition reflects a broader strategy to strengthen international alliances and bolster military readiness amid ongoing tensions.
