Ukrainian President Signs Sanctions Decrees

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed decrees enacting sanctions against Russian and Iranian companies, citizens, Paralympians, and military commanders. These measures implement decisions made by Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC). The sanctions target not only business entities but also individuals who support Russia's aggressive policies, as Ukraine continues to seek international pressure on the Kremlin.

Scope of the Sanctions Package

The new decrees apply sanctions to Russian and Iranian companies and citizens, including ten Russian Paralympians who have justified the Russian Federation's aggression. The package targeting the military-industrial complex includes 130 individuals and 48 legal entities. Sanctions also extend to nearly 130 Russian commanders. Ukraine has provided the European Union with a document containing the personal data of these commanders and information on approximately 300 of their relatives.

Ukraine is actively cooperating with the European Union on sanctions implementation. President Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine's leadership in this initiative, stating:

"We must work to ensure that all those involved in the war against Ukraine are barred from entering European Union countries"
– Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also expressed gratitude to international partners for their support in this matter.

Concurrently, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, a Ukrainian government representative, noted that

"the Russian and Iranian military-industrial complexes have long been interconnected."
He stressed that the sanctions package highlights key players involved in manufacturing the weaponry Russia uses to attack Ukraine. "The world must do significantly more to sever these supply chains," Vlasiuk added.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine has imposed sanctions on over 300 individuals. From the first day of the aggression, Russian long-range aviation has launched over 4,100 cruise missiles at Ukraine, while enemy frigates have carried out about 160 missile strikes using more than 1,500 sea-launched cruise missiles. These figures underscore the scale of the threat Ukraine faces and the ongoing need for international support and pressure on the aggressor.

The introduction of new sanctions against Russian and Iranian companies and citizens underscores Ukraine's proactive stance in countering aggression from the Russian Federation and its allies. Cooperation with the European Union in this area demonstrates the critical importance of international backing for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. The application of sanctions serves as a key tool to limit resources used for waging war and to increase pressure on aggressor states. Such actions can also help foster greater international solidarity against aggression in Ukraine and the wider region.
