President Zelenskyy Honors Young Chess Champion

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has met with 17-year-old chess player Roman Degtyarev, who recently won the European Chess Championship in Katowice, Poland. Hailing from Kharkiv, Degtyarev made history by becoming the first player ever to win this prestigious title without holding a grandmaster rank. This victory is a significant achievement in the chess world, where such titles are typically prerequisites for top-level success.

At the championship, Roman scored 9 points out of a possible 11, defeating Spanish Grandmaster David Anton in the final round. Remarkably, he began the tournament ranked 126th among nearly 500 competitors. With this win, Degtyarev becomes the third European champion to compete under the Ukrainian flag, joining the ranks of:

  • Vasyl Ivanchuk, the 2004 champion,
  • Oleksandr Moiseenko, who won the title in 2013.

It is also notable that Ukrainian players Ruslan Ponomariov and Vasyl Ivanchuk have previously earned silver medals at European Championships.

“I met with Roman Degtyarev – a 17-year-old chess player from Kharkiv. He is the first in history to win the European Championship without a grandmaster title. I presented him with the 'Future of Ukraine' award. We talked about his journey, training, and plans. He has been playing chess since he was five and already has major victories both in Ukraine and internationally,” the President noted.

Zelenskyy also expressed his pride in the young champion's accomplishments:

“Congratulations on this important victory. Thank you for representing Ukraine on the international stage at such a high level. We are proud of you, Roman, and all our people.”

Roman Degtyarev's success not only highlights the talent of young Ukrainian chess players but also serves as an inspiration for new generations of athletes in the country. His European championship win underscores the importance of supporting youth in sports and on the global stage. The presidential meeting and the 'Future of Ukraine' award signify state-level recognition of his achievements, which may encourage other young talents to pursue excellence in their own fields. This comes at a time when Ukrainian successes in cultural and intellectual spheres provide a powerful source of national pride and resilience.

Degtyarev's remarkable victory not only shines a spotlight on his individual talent but also reflects the growing prominence of Ukrainian chess on the European stage.
