Ukrainian President Meets Slovak Prime Minister
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine's head of state, sat down with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Brussels during a working visit to Belgium. The two leaders tackled topics including Ukraine's path toward European Union membership, energy cooperation, and outcomes from the G7 summit held in Évian, France. They also reached an agreement to hold another round of intergovernmental consultations between Ukraine and Slovakia. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the opening of the first negotiation cluster, "Fundamentals," which received unanimous approval from all 27 EU member states at an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg on June 15.
Discussions with Greece's Prime Minister
In addition, Zelenskyy held talks with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Notably, Slovak Premier Robert Fico traveled to Moscow in May of this year for "Victory Day" commemorations. Currently, Fico's government faces the risk of collapse as Slovakia's public debt has climbed to 61.4%, exceeding the constitutional threshold of 50%.
It is worth recalling that Zelenskyy and Fico previously met in Yerevan during the European Political Community summit in early May.
"We expect progress on opening the remaining clusters in the near future," Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated.Kyiv's top priority remains unlocking the other five negotiation clusters, a critical milestone in Ukraine's EU integration journey.
This meeting between Zelenskyy and Fico highlights the significance of Ukraine-Slovakia cooperation amid Kyiv's European aspirations. Advancing the negotiation clusters is pivotal for Ukraine's progress toward EU membership, especially given the current challenges both nations face. Slovakia's rising debt levels could threaten political stability there, a factor that may influence bilateral dynamics going forward.
