Zelensky and Tsikhanouskaya Hold Talks in Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting with Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya in Kyiv on May 26. The discussion took place on the sidelines of an international summit that brought together representatives from 24 countries. This marked Tsikhanouskaya's first official visit to the Ukrainian capital.

The summit included participants from the following nations:

  • Poland
  • Slovakia
  • Hungary
  • Moldova
  • Romania
  • Belarus

During their meeting, Zelensky underscored the need to stand with the Belarusian people as they seek to break free from Russian interference.

“We all support the Belarusian people's desire to rid themselves of Russian meddling, and we know that Russia is now trying to drag Belarus even deeper into this war against Ukraine. We value every gesture of support from Belarusians for a free Ukraine,” the president stated.

Zelensky also stressed that Ukraine has never posed a threat to Belarus.

“Today, that is exactly what we discussed with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and her team, who are visiting Kyiv. Ukraine has never been a threat to Belarus. And we are grateful to those Belarusians who stand with Ukraine now, when the fate of our independence—and the independence of every nation bordering Russia—is being decided,” he added.

Strengthening Political Ties Between Ukraine and Belarus

This meeting highlights the growing political cooperation between Ukraine and the Belarusian opposition, a development that could shape regional stability. It also underscores the strategic importance of supporting democratic processes in Belarus as the country faces both internal and external pressures. Closer ties between Kyiv and Minsk may prove pivotal in countering Russian influence across the region.

As Ukraine strengthens its political ties with the Belarusian opposition, the situation remains tense in the region. Recent developments, including Russia's announcement of planned strikes on Kyiv’s defense industry, highlight the ongoing threats that both nations face. This backdrop underscores the urgency of international support for Ukraine and its allies as they navigate these challenges.
