Національна збірна жінок України зазнала п'ятої поразки в відбіркових матчах чемпіонату світу 2027 року.

Ukraine Falls to Iceland in 2027 World Cup Qualification Match

Ukraine’s women’s national football team lost 0-1 to Iceland in a 2027 World Cup qualifying match. The only goal was scored by Palmadottir, assisted by Jessen. This marks the fifth loss for the Ukrainian squad in the qualification campaign.

After five matches, Ukraine remains at the bottom of the group with zero points. Their next game is against England on June 9. Here is the current standings in Group A3 of the 2027 World Cup qualifiers:

  • England – 12 points (4 matches)
  • Spain – 9 points (4 matches)
  • Iceland – 6 points (5 matches)
  • Ukraine – 0 points (5 matches)

Path to the World Cup

The winner of Group A3 will earn a direct spot in the World Cup. UEFA’s qualification for the 2027 tournament includes three stages, with the top team from each of the four League A groups securing an automatic berth. The remaining slots will be decided through playoffs scheduled for October to December 2026.

Two players made their debuts in this match: Oleksandr Romanchuk started and played the first half, while Hennadiy Synchuk came off the bench midway through the second half. Additionally, Mykhailo Mudryk received a four-year suspension from the English Football Association, but on February 26, he appealed the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

This loss severely undermines Ukraine’s chances of reaching the World Cup, as the team has not only failed to earn any points but also faces significant struggles in attack.

The upcoming match against England is critical, as Ukraine desperately needs a win to keep any hope alive in the qualification race. It is also important to monitor the situation regarding Mykhailo Mudryk’s suspension, as his absence could impact the team’s overall strength in future games.

As Ukraine grapples with its struggles in the World Cup qualifiers, the broader landscape of international sports is also shifting. Recent discussions surrounding the potential return of Russian teams to the EuroLeague highlight the complexities athletes face in today's competitive environment. Understanding these dynamics may provide insights into the challenges that the Ukrainian team must navigate in their quest for qualification.
