A 105-Year-Old's Story of Survival: Resilience Through War and Loss in Kamianske

Незламний дух людини: історія витривалості та втрат у Кам’янському.

The Life of Valentyna Maslenkova

On March 13, Valentyna Maslenkova from the city of Kamianske celebrated her 105th birthday. Her long life has been marked by profound hardship, including the horrors of the Second World War. During the conflict, she lost her left hand and her eight-month-old daughter. Her brother was also killed in the war. Having outlived three of her own children, Valentyna's story is a testament to extraordinary resilience.

Family Support and Daily Optimism

Today, she is cared for by her grandson Dmytro and daughter-in-law Raisa, who support her in daily life. This care became essential after Valentyna lost her sight at age 100 and later much of her hearing. Despite these challenges, she maintains a strict daily routine, ensuring she drinks enough water, eats nutritious meals, and does her exercises.

"Grandma spoiled us all—with pies, dumplings, she was a wonderful homemaker." - Raisa Maslenkova

Valentyna's memories of the war remain vivid and painful. Recalling a traumatic event, she said, 'My brother was killed, our grandmother's arm was torn off, and five other people died there.' She still feels the physical and emotional scars: 'Shrapnel in my chest still troubles me. When they cut off my hand then, it was shattered here, the bone was cracked.' She also speaks of her longing for peace: 'So there is no war. So that Putin... I don't know what he wants anymore, why he has driven so many people to their deaths.' Her perspective offers a crucial, firsthand account of the historical trauma experienced by generations of Ukrainians.

In spite of everything, Valentyna maintains an optimistic outlook. When asked about her diet, she remarked simply, 'It was all the same. What did I eat? What there was—that's what we ate. Nothing special. I have no secret.' This woman, who has endured so much loss, continues to live with hope. Each year before her birthday, her family buys her a new festive outfit, bringing a touch of joy to her life.

The story of Valentyna Maslenkova stands as a powerful example of human endurance and willpower, particularly against the backdrop of the tragic events she survived. Her recollections provide an invaluable perspective on history and the wars endured by her people.
