Ukrainian Defense Forces Initiate Counteroffensive
Ukrainian Defense Forces have commenced counteroffensive operations in the east, responding to intensified combat in the region. A critical development aiding this push is that Russian troops have lost access to Starlink terminals following intervention by SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports this information, citing Western intelligence data. This technological disruption highlights the growing role of private companies in modern warfare.
Local Counterattacks and Strikes on Arsenals
Currently, Ukrainian defenders are conducting localized counterattacks between southern Dobropillia and areas north of Varvariyka. Intense fighting has also been recorded near Ternuvate and Zaliznychne, on the border of Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. SpaceX's decision to block Russian military use of Starlink terminals came after evidence emerged that occupying forces were using them for long-range drones. Nearly 90% of Russian units in this sector have been left without stable communications.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also reported successful strikes on Russian arsenals. Specifically, they hit:
- a large ammunition depot near Volgograd;
- a missile production plant in the Tambov region.
Ukrainian forces used Flamingo cruise missiles to strike these targets. Additionally, near Sudzha in the Kursk region, Ukrainian forces destroyed 6,000 enemy FPV drones.
On the night of February 12, 2026, Russian forces deployed 244 aerial attack assets. The Kremlin has also introduced new restrictions on the use of the Telegram messenger, likely linked to recent communication and command problems within Russian units. As the ISW notes, Ukrainian counterattacks in the border area of Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions are likely intended to exploit these enemy vulnerabilities.
