Ukrainian President Meets Saudi Crown Prince in Jeddah
On April 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud in Jeddah. Their discussions centered on a strategic security agreement built around three core areas:
- Exporting Ukrainian security expertise and capabilities;
- Energy collaboration;
- Food security.
A significant portion of the talks focused on energy resilience amid the current fuel market crisis, triggered by tensions involving Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The leaders also explored Saudi Arabia's potential involvement in Ukraine's infrastructure projects, reconstruction and recovery efforts, as well as financial sector partnerships. Zelenskyy briefed the Crown Prince on the status of negotiations aimed at ending Russia's war against Ukraine.
President Zelenskyy highlighted the three priorities:
'First, the export of our Ukrainian security expertise and capabilities, particularly in air defense. Second, energy cooperation, which strengthens Ukraine's resilience during these difficult times. Third, the food security track. We are working together to empower our nations and our partners.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy
He also stressed the importance of bilateral efforts in restoring confidence in international relations: 'At a time when global relations are deeply destabilized, it is precisely this kind of bilateral work that rebuilds trust.' The two sides also exchanged assessments of the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region. Their shared hope is for greater security, and they are actively working to achieve it.
Specific tasks have been assigned to teams from both countries to advance cooperation in these areas.
This high-level meeting underscores a renewed push for international collaboration in the face of global challenges arising from conflicts and economic crises. The focus on energy and food security, along with security expertise, reflects a strategic approach by both nations to tackling shared problems. For Ukraine, this engagement could unlock new economic opportunities and strengthen its standing on the world stage.
