Russian Disinformation Targets Ukraine

According to Главком: As Ukraine seeks to bolster its international security partnerships, it faces a concerted Russian disinformation campaign. The Spravdi Center for Strategic Communications has reported that the Russian Federation is conducting information attacks aimed at undermining Ukraine's security cooperation with Middle Eastern nations. These attacks coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Saudi Arabia, where the two countries intend to sign a security cooperation agreement.

According to the report, the campaign employs bot farms, fake videos mimicking global media, and manipulations regarding the exchange of military expertise. On March 26 alone, 7,300 materials about Ukraine were published across 120 platforms. Legitimate media outlets disseminated approximately 6,100 of these publications from over 1,100 sources. Notably, around 54% of foreign-language content about Ukraine was posted on platforms linked to Russian information interference.

Core Narratives of the Campaign

The campaign's primary goals are to promote narratives depicting Ukraine as a failed state dependent on foreign aid and under external control. It separately spreads claims of a supposed rift within the EU and NATO over support for Ukraine, as well as the false narrative of Ukraine as a terrorist state. To support these claims, Russia uses accusations of Ukrainian involvement in incidents such as the attack on the ALTURA tanker in the Black Sea and the Ukrainian Defense Forces' operation in the Leningrad region on March 24-25.

President Zelenskyy arrived in Saudi Arabia on March 26 for planned high-level meetings. He stated:

"We value support and stand with those who are ready to work with us for the sake of security."

Zelenskyy also noted that Ukraine is working on exchanging interceptor drones for air defense missiles. He has engaged with the United States regarding its bases in Middle Eastern countries and has received requests from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait.

"With some we are already working, and our expert teams are already on the ground: assessing the situation, sharing invaluable experience,"

the President added.

Ukrainian specialists have already successfully neutralized several Iranian drones in one Middle Eastern country. However, the direct sale of Ukrainian interceptor drones to nations in the region remains blocked at the state leadership level. This ongoing information war highlights how modern geopolitical conflicts extend beyond the battlefield into the realm of perception and alliance-building.

The situation underscores the critical role of information warfare in contemporary geopolitics, where Russian attacks seek to destabilize Ukraine's international relations and security commitments. President Zelenskyy's visit to Saudi Arabia and the pursuit of security agreements could mark significant steps in strengthening Ukraine's partnerships with Middle Eastern states, particularly amid escalating threats from Russia.

As the disinformation campaign intensifies, President Zelenskyy's recent diplomatic visit is crucial for countering these narratives and strengthening Ukraine's global security ties.
