There is zero chance of a collision during this flyby or for at least the next century. In recognition of this event, the United Nations has declared 2029 the International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Protection.
Named after the Egyptian god of chaos and darkness, Apep, Apophis has a peanut-like shape and measures about 450 meters across at its widest point-roughly the height of the Empire State Building. This asteroid originates from the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and it orbits between Venus and Earth, completing one trip around the Sun every 10.5 months.
Observing Apophis
The asteroid's flyby will last roughly seven hours. Early in the passage, about 4.5 billion people in Australia and most of Asia will be able to see it. Later, around 1.9 billion people in eastern South America, North Africa, and parts of Europe will get a view. At the peak of visibility, roughly midway through the event, up to 5.7 billion people could potentially spot Apophis. Its brightness will rival the stars of the Big Dipper, and the best images are expected to come from astronomical observatories on Spain's Canary Islands.
North America will be the only continent where clear observation of Apophis won't be possible. NASA's OSIRIS-APEX mission also plans to fly past the asteroid, adding scientific value to the event.
Astronomer Richard Binzel noted that 'watching Apophis is a way to share a collective cosmic experience and realize just how small Earth is in the vastness of space.'
