Strong to the Very End

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: The story of combat medic Yuliia Zubchenko, call sign Sirena, has become a symbol of courage and self-sacrifice during the Russo-Ukrainian war. Serving in the Azov Special Operations Detachment of the National Guard of Ukraine, she played an active role in the defense of Mariupol. On May 8, 2022, she was killed at the Azovstal plant during a Russian airstrike-a tragedy that devastated not only her family but the entire nation. Yuliia’s story highlights the immense risks faced by frontline medical personnel in modern warfare.

Yuliia Zubchenko was born on January 12, 1995, in Svitlovodsk, Kirovohrad region. After completing ninth grade, she enrolled in the Kremenchuk Medical College, qualifying as a paramedic. She later graduated from Kharkiv National Pharmaceutical University with a degree as a pharmacist. In 2020, she joined the Azov Special Operations Detachment, where she earned the call sign Sirena.

Life and Service

Following the outbreak of the full-scale war, Yuliia was stationed in Mariupol, Donetsk region. In March 2022, she suffered a concussion while evacuating wounded soldiers under fire from Russian forces. The field hospital where she worked was later relocated to the Azovstal plant, an extremely dangerous environment for her duties.

At the time of her death, Yuliia Zubchenko was 27 years old. She is survived by her son Artem, who was just seven years old when he lost his mother. The memory of Yuliia-who wore the inscription 'Cold mind, warm heart' on her body armor-will live on in the hearts of those who knew her and honor her bravery. Her final moments, including her son Artem’s words, 'Here, Mom, I’m giving you a treat,' remain a poignant symbol of her maternal love and sacrifice.

The heroic story of Yuliia Zubchenko not only underscores the critical importance of medical support on the battlefield but also reflects the profound humanity and selflessness that emerge in the most difficult times. Her legacy inspires others to serve and fight for their country, while also reminding us of the heavy price paid by medics in wartime. The memory of individuals like Yuliia must become a cornerstone of Ukraine’s national consciousness, as they embody the courage and resilience in the struggle for freedom and independence.
