Travel Preferences Among Britons

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Despite economic pressures, vacations remain a top priority for British travelers. However, the rising cost of living has led many to favor more affordable options such as budget trips, package holidays, and cruises. Recent surveys reveal that 70% of UK adults intend to travel abroad within the next year. Europe remains the most sought-after destination, with Spain leading the pack-visited by 36% of respondents. France follows with 24%, then Italy (15%), the USA (14%), Greece (12%), and Portugal (11%). Notably, Portugal has overtaken Germany in popularity.

Shifts in Holiday Choices

Data from 2026 indicates a growing preference for package tours, chosen by 48% of travelers-an increase of 5% compared to the previous year. Cruises are also gaining traction, with 13% of Britons taking a cruise in 2026 and 17% planning to do so in 2027. Over half (52%) regard cruises as offering excellent value for money, up from 49% last year. Additionally, 40% of tourists appreciate the convenience of paying for their entire trip upfront, a 2% rise over the prior year.

Among the most popular types of vacations over the past 12 months were:

  • City breaks (53%)
  • Beach and seaside resorts (49%)
  • Rural retreats (23%)
  • Multi-destination trips (16%)
  • Adventure holidays (14%)
  • Cruises (13%)
  • Lakeside and mountain getaways (10%)
  • Wellness trips (9%)

The ongoing conflict with Iran continues to impact the travel market, keeping jet fuel prices roughly 50% above pre-war levels. Michael O'Leary, CEO of Ryanair Group, emphasizes the importance of factoring in economic realities when planning travel under these conditions.

Travel expert Mark Tanzer comments, "The desire for holidays remains strong despite geopolitical and economic challenges that make travel harder for some. This trend is expected to continue."

He also highlights the reassurance that booking through experienced ABTA members provides: "In a market where value for money is crucial, professional agents help travelers find trips that fit their budget and expectations."

In summary, even with economic and political uncertainties, British travelers are actively organizing their vacations, leaning toward cost-effective travel options and favoured European destinations. This resilience in travel demand reflects tourists’ adaptability to market changes. The growing popularity of package holidays and cruises suggests a shift toward minimizing financial risks and simplifying holiday planning.

As British travelers seek value amid rising costs, airlines are adapting to meet demand. For instance, Ryanair has announced new routes for summer 2027, making it easier for vacationers to explore affordable destinations across Europe. This expansion highlights the airline's commitment to providing budget-friendly travel options, aligning with the evolving preferences of holidaymakers.
