Turning Down the Honor

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's Presidential Office, has renounced the Golden Officer's Cross of Poland's Order of Merit. The move came in direct response to Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s decision to strip Ukraine’s President of the Order of the White Eagle. Budanov voiced his outrage, calling the act a hostile gesture against the Ukrainian people.

In his statement, Budanov stressed that revoking the Order of the White Eagle effectively gifts Moscow a propaganda tool that could be weaponized against both nations. He also highlighted the deep historical ties between Ukraine and Poland, urging a thoughtful examination of the situation rather than political exploitation.

“Unfortunately, Polish President Karol Nawrocki has committed an unfriendly act toward our people by stripping Ukraine’s President of the previously awarded Order of the White Eagle,” Budanov stated.

Budanov emphasized that Ukraine does not dictate how any other nation should study its history, but reserves the right to its own national memory and dignity. He also questioned the fairness of the Polish president's move, asking: “How can we talk about justice when, for instance, the Order of the White Eagle has not been taken away from the Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini?”

Budanov assured that Ukraine will assess the incident but will continue to uphold partnerships with all allies, insisting that such partnerships must be:

  • based on equality,
  • and grounded in mutual respect.

He also noted that Ukraine will keep defending all of Europe, including Poland, even at a heavy cost. 'But like any Ukrainian, I cannot stand aside and simply watch as a machine of hatred is groundlessly and artificially turned against our citizens,' Budanov concluded.

“In light of this, I renounce the Golden Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, which was awarded to me last year by the Polish President. I am confident that Ukrainian society-both military and civilian-feels the same emotions and will support this step,” Kyrylo Budanov summed up.

This episode underscores rising friction between Ukraine and Poland, which could affect their strategic partnership, especially amid their shared fight against external threats. The refusal of the award serves as a symbolic act that may reflect deeper cultural and political tensions, as well as misunderstandings arising in a complex regional security environment. Ukrainian leadership, in particular, is working to protect national interests and memory-factors likely to shape future bilateral relations.

This recent diplomatic incident is not isolated, as Budanov's rejection of the Polish honor follows a notable controversy involving President Zelenskyy. The ongoing tensions highlight the complexities of Ukraine-Poland relations and the impact of historical recognition on current diplomacy.
