Germany’s Bundestag Officially Acknowledges Historical Responsibility for Babyn Yar and Reaffirms Support for Ukraine

Bundestag acknowledges Germany's historical responsibility for Babi Yar
Німецький Бундестаг визнав свою історичну відповідальність за події в Бабиному Яру та підтвердив солідарність з Україною.

Special Bundestag Session Commemorates Babyn Yar Tragedy

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: On October 9, the German Bundestag held a dedicated session marking the 85th anniversary of the Babyn Yar massacre. During this event, parliamentarians formally recognized Germany’s unique historical accountability to Ukraine for the atrocities committed under National Socialism. The Bundestag adopted two motions-one put forward by the ruling CDU/CSU and SPD coalition, and another from the opposition Alliance 90/The Greens-highlighting Germany’s commitment to combating antisemitism, racism, historical revisionism, and imperialist violence.

Key Demands of the Bundestag Resolutions

The motions emphasized the crucial need for continued political, economic, financial, humanitarian, and military aid to Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia. This support is vital to safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Babyn Yar massacre, which took place in late September 1941, stands as one of the largest mass executions of Jews, with over 33,000 Jewish residents of Kyiv murdered on September 29–30 alone. Estimates of total victims killed at Babyn Yar between 1941 and 1943 range from 70,000 to 100,000 people.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, described the Bundestag’s unanimous passage of both motions-with backing from both coalition and opposition parties-as unprecedented. He remarked:

'According to usual parliamentary logic, this should not have happened. Yet it did. Instead of political maneuvering, nearly all Bundestag factions, with the exception of one (referring to AfD), chose to make history. Both motions were passed with no votes against.' Oleksii Makeiev

Notably, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) faction was the only group to oppose the motions. Meanwhile, abstentions during the vote came from The Left party, as well as some members of CDU/CSU and SPD. The Bundestag’s decisions underscore the importance of preserving historical memory and reinforcing support for Ukraine in today’s challenging geopolitical environment.

This parliamentary action reflects Germany’s increasing acknowledgment of its historical obligations regarding National Socialist crimes and its readiness to support Ukraine amid present-day geopolitical tensions. Supporting Ukraine has become a cornerstone of Germany’s foreign policy, and resolutions such as these may influence the broader international approach toward Ukraine.
