Southern Ukraine Faces Catastrophic River Drying: What Will Save Water Resources

Ecologists sound the alarm: river without water
На півдні України спостерігається критичне пересихання річок: які заходи забезпечать збереження води?

In southern and southeastern Ukraine, water instability continues to threaten the existence of some rivers over the next 50 years, notes WWF-Ukraine representative Oksana Konovalенко.

The north and center of the country have enough water, while the southern region is becoming increasingly vulnerable to drought. This leads to the drying up of small rivers that feed the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

'In the absence of precipitation, they can completely dry up, and after rain, they can turn into temporary waterways,' notes the expert. Seasonal fluctuations have already saved from permanent water loss.

The problem is exacerbated by uneven distribution of water resources, pollution of rivers, and overgrowth of riverbeds. To overcome these problems, it is necessary to modernize wastewater treatment plants, restore riparian zones, and revise land use practices.

'In many places, the land is plowed almost up to the riverbank, depriving the rivers of natural protection. This only exacerbates the problem,' emphasizes Konovalенко.

Climate Change and Ecosystems

Decreased precipitation and rising temperatures are leading to the shallowing of rivers and lakes in southern Ukraine, threatening water ecosystems. Each drought increases the risk of deterioration of river conditions.

A comprehensive policy that combines state and public measures to address these issues is necessary, emphasizes the expert.

Moreover, it is important to remember that 12% of bathing sites in Ukraine are contaminated with E. coli.

The southern and southeastern regions of Ukraine are facing increasing water instability, threatening the existence of rivers. Droughts, uneven distribution of water resources, and pollution are having significant draining impacts on ecosystems. Experts call for comprehensive measures to combat these problems and preserve water resources. Climate change is affecting water systems, endangering rivers and ecosystems in the country, so it is important to pay attention to these issues.
