After the onset of the full-scale war, millions of Ukrainians left for abroad, and the question of their return is becoming one of the defining issues for the future of the country. This is stated by the All-Ukrainian Association of companies for international employment.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, a significant number of Ukrainians are ready to return when the security situation allows. At the same time, experts emphasize: the longer they stay abroad, the harder it will be to make the decision to return.

Returning Ukrainians after the war: what influences the decision

Experts highlight several key factors that will determine whether people return home:

  • the level of security in Ukraine
  • availability of housing
  • the possibility of employment
  • access to education and medicine.

The President of the All-Ukrainian Association of companies for international employment Vasyl Voskoboynyk explains that survey results may not reflect real intentions.

«In reality, after the war ends, people will start counting: what they have abroad and what they will have in Ukraine,» he stressed.

Ukrainian refugees in Europe: why integration is increasing

Over time, Ukrainians adapt to life abroad, find jobs, housing, and establish a routine. This reduces the likelihood of return, especially for families with children.

Forecasts suggest that the first to return may be:

  • elderly people
  • persons with disabilities
  • women with children.

At the same time, the decisive factor remains so-called «anchors» in Ukraine - personal housing, business, or work.

The situation is most complicated for displaced persons from frontline regions, where infrastructure has been destroyed. For them, the question of return is associated with basic challenges: where to live, work, and educate children.

These factors may define how many Ukrainians return after the war and how quickly the country will recover.

It is worth noting that, according to experts, the contribution of Ukrainian citizens to the Polish economy already amounts to at least 2.7% of the gross domestic product.
