The State Bureau of Investigations refuted Hungary's manipulation regarding the death of serviceman Shebeshteni

According to glavcom.ua: The State Bureau of Investigations urges not to manipulate statements regarding the investigation of the circumstances surrounding the death of Ukrainian citizen and ethnic Hungarian Yosif Shebeshteni. Previously, such reports were disseminated by the Hungarian side. This was reported by 'Glavkom' referring to the SBI.

“In recent days, information has reappeared in foreign and domestic media regarding the circumstances of the death on July 6, 2025, of Ukrainian citizen – ethnic Hungarian Yosif Shebeshteni. The main focus of these reports is allegedly on the SBI's refusal to investigate the circumstances of this serviceman's death. The State Bureau of Investigations states that such statements are manipulative in nature and do not correspond to reality,” the message says.

Within the framework of the criminal proceeding, a forensic medical examination was conducted, witnesses were interrogated, including servicemen and doctors. The results of the investigation did not reveal any signs of violent death. The investigation continues.

Ukraine and Hungary's confrontation regarding the death of Yosif Shebeshteni

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary summoned the Ukrainian ambassador in Budapest, Fedor Shandor, due to the death of a 45-year-old resident of Transcarpathia who held Hungarian citizenship. Budapest claims that the man allegedly died after being beaten by representatives of the TCC. Soon, the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reacted to the statement of the Hungarian diplomat. They refuted the information about beating and illegal mobilization.

Serviceman Yosif Shebeshteni is a citizen of Ukraine and served in one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was mobilized into the ranks of the Armed Forces on legal grounds on June 14, 2025, after passing a medical commission that recognized him as fit for military service. By June 15, Shebeshteni was sent to one of the military units where he underwent training, and on June 18, he left the military unit without permission.

In December 2025, the State Bureau of Investigations reported the completion of the investigation into the death of Yosif Shebeshteni and confirmed the absence of any signs of violent death. The agency also noted that the information about the serviceman being beaten by members of the TCC is a manipulation, does not correspond to reality, and contributed to the submission of unfounded statements by Hungarian officials.
