Demographer predicts a decline in birth rates

The next year will be a year of catastrophic decline in birth rates.

There are risks that by 2030, Ukraine's population may decrease to at least 35 million. This was stated by the director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies named after Ptukha of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Economic Sciences Ella Libanova, as reported by 'Ukrinform'.

'I dream that by 2030 we will have 35 million. Unfortunately, this may not happen. Because the war continues, we are losing people due to excessive mortality. It is not only those who died, but also those who die due to stress, overloads, poor nutrition, and insufficient medical care,' she said.

Additionally, according to Libanova, the low birth rate is also a factor.

'We do not fully feel this yet. But 2023 will be a year of catastrophic decline in this indicator,' she stated.

'For simple generation recovery, one woman needs to give birth to 2.13 - 2.15 children in her lifetime (on average). In 2021, we had an indicator of 1.1. In 2022 it was even lower, but the reduction will not yet be catastrophic due to children born in the first half of the year. God willing, in 2023 we will stop at an indicator of 0.8,' the demographer stated.

Another quantitatively painful but not so terrifying problem is migration, according to Libanova.

According to the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the NAS of Ukraine, since 1994, the population in Ukraine has been decreasing annually. Currently, there are about 34-35 million people living in the country.

Russian occupiers have deported 2.8 million Ukrainian citizens to Russia.
