Deposits 2026: what rates are banks offering and how to protect savings

According to ХВИЛЯ: As the year 2026 approaches, the Ukrainian banking deposit market shows stability, with banks offering increased interest rates and bonuses on deposits. From December 29 to January 4, the average rates for hryvnia deposits range from 13% to 14.5% annually, while the maximum rate can reach up to 18% per annum. The director of the retail business department of 'Globus Bank', Dmytro Zamotaiev, noted that we are in the season of maximum encouragement for depositors.

Bank promotional offers will be relevant until mid-January. The market is witnessing a growth of new depositors in December 2025 at a level of 5-7% compared to November. As of December 1, Ukrainians held over 1.5 trillion hryvnias in banks, with 58% of depositors having accounts with sums up to 200,000 hryvnias.

Foreign currency deposits and inflation

Foreign currency deposits account for about 10% of banks' portfolios, but the profit from dollar deposits is 11-12 times lower than that from hryvnia deposits. The inflation forecast at 9.5-9.7% for the year-end is the main stimulus for depositors, as preserving wealth from inflation and the possibility of earning a small net profit remain important factors. Deposit terms range from 6 to 9 months and also for 1 year.

The situation in the deposit market in Ukraine indicates an increasing interest of the population in savings in hryvnias, which may be due to high rates and the desire to protect their assets from inflation. The relevance of promotional offers until mid-January may contribute to further growth in the number of depositors and the volume of deposits, positively affecting the stability of the banking system. At the same time, the low profitability of foreign currency deposits indicates that Ukrainians consider hryvnia deposits more advantageous under current economic conditions.
