Germany's Deutsche Bahn Bans Alcohol at All Train Stations Nationwide

Alcohol Consumption Prohibited at German Railway Stations

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Germany's national railway operator, Deutsche Bahn (DB), has announced a ban on alcohol consumption across all 5,400 train stations in the country. This move is part of a broader effort to combat crime and vandalism. The prohibition takes effect until July 21, 2026, and applies to platforms and station halls, though licensed restaurants are exempt.

The decision follows a violent incident last Friday evening on the railway line between Offenburg and Karlsruhe. During a ticket inspection, a conflict with an intoxicated passenger escalated into a fight, resulting in a 26-year-old DB security employee being attacked, falling from a moving train, and sustaining severe injuries. According to Federal Police statistics, more than one-third of all violent crimes at train stations are committed under the influence of alcohol.

New Rules and Their Implementation

The new alcohol ban is already in effect at roughly 30 major stations, including those in Cologne, Munich, and Hamburg. However, passengers are still allowed to carry alcohol in sealed bags or purchase it from shops. Violators will be immediately removed from station premises by security personnel or federal police, and repeat offenders may face a permanent ban from entering the station.

Deutsche Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla commented: 'Enough is enough. We are now taking even tougher action. We want more order and safety at our stations and on our trains.'

She further stated: 'We are banning alcohol consumption at our stations. Too often, we see that where there is too much alcohol, violence increases. The brutal and senseless attack last Friday demonstrated this once again.'

This initiative by Deutsche Bahn is part of a wider strategy to enhance safety on the railway network and reduce violence at stations. The alcohol ban was implemented in response to rising cases of alcohol-related violence, as confirmed by Federal Police data. The enforcement of this policy may also shape public attitudes toward drinking in public spaces, as similar decisions often set a precedent for other transport companies and institutions.
