Three Fountains Set to Flow Again in Central Kyiv for City Day
Fountains Restored for Kyiv Day Celebrations
According to Главком: A trio of fountains in downtown Kyiv will be reactivated in time for Kyiv Day: the Founders of Kyiv fountain complex, the Cascade Fountain on Maidan Nezalezhnosti, and the fountain at 25 Khreshchatyk Street. However, due to the ongoing war, the capital will not host a full fountain season this year. High-tech light-and-music fountains will remain switched off until the conflict ends. According to Kyivvodfond,
“Unfortunately, the high-tech light-and-music fountains will not be turned on until the war is over. This is a deliberate and responsible decision, made with the need for rational resource use in mind.”
Cultural Events Amid Wartime
Kyiv Day is traditionally observed on the last Sunday of May. This year, no large-scale public festivities are planned, but local cultural and artistic events have been organized for residents at museums and libraries. The activation of the water features on Khreshchatyk serves as a symbolic gesture, reflecting Kyivans' desire to restore a sense of normalcy despite challenging circumstances.
The Founders of Kyiv fountain complex, designed by sculptor Anatoliy Kushch, along with the other water installations, will help create a festive atmosphere in the capital, albeit on a limited scale. This gives residents the chance to enjoy these aesthetic landmarks, which-despite the war-add a unique charm to the city.
Restarting these fountains in Kyiv, even in a reduced capacity, underscores the public's commitment to sustaining cultural life and the city's visual appeal amid wartime. The decision also highlights the importance of using resources wisely during this difficult period. Meanwhile, the local cultural events demonstrate an effort to preserve traditions and encourage community engagement in the city's cultural scene.
While the recent reactivation of fountains in Kyiv marks a small celebration of resilience, it's worth noting that 27 fountains are currently operational across the city, providing a glimpse of normalcy amidst ongoing challenges. This initiative not only enhances the city's aesthetic but also reflects the community's enduring spirit during these trying times.
