Mass Effect: Universe Project Cancelled

According to НВ — Техно: On October 22, EA announced it is discontinuing the development of the new Mass Effect: Universe game and closing the BioWare studio located in Edmonton. This was confirmed by a trailer that appeared on Reddit and was verified as authentic by IGN. The sequel to the acclaimed Mass Effect series was initially revealed during The Game Awards in December 2020, but EA has recently decided to abandon the project.

The storyline of Mass Effect: Universe was set to take place in the Milky Way galaxy several centuries after the events of Mass Effect 3. Players would have taken on the role of a former soldier aiding the asari Liara T’Soni. The trailer showcased a variety of alien species expected to feature in the game, including:

  • Krogan
  • Asari
  • Turian
  • Salarians

BioWare’s cinematic supervisor Tony de Vaal highlighted that the game aimed to offer unprecedented freedom and player choice, surpassing anything seen in previous titles.

Challenges Facing the Video Game Industry

According to an internal memo from EA executives Kem Weber and David Tinson, the decision to close the Edmonton studio came after the disappointing launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which failed to meet sales expectations. This move is part of a wider reduction affecting 400 employees, or roughly 3% of EA’s workforce. Notably, the cancellation comes just days before N7 Day on November 7, a date celebrated by Mass Effect fans worldwide, making the news particularly poignant.

The development team on Mass Effect: Universe reportedly included about 50 people. Writer Katherine M. Valente was also involved, expressing confidence that the team had crafted a compelling game and discovered how to bring it to life. Despite these efforts, the project has been shelved, and BioWare’s Edmonton operations are being wound down.

This cancellation and studio closure highlight the ongoing volatility within the gaming industry, where even major publishers like EA must navigate unpredictable financial outcomes. The loss of such a beloved franchise as Mass Effect may impact fan loyalty and future investment in new titles. These events also reflect broader trends of restructuring and downsizing amid a rapidly evolving market landscape.
