Emergency UN Security Council Session Convened

According to Главком: At Ukraine's request, the UN Security Council held an emergency session in Washington, D.C., prompted by recent Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure. During the meeting, Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrii Melnyk, provided an assessment of Russian military losses and territorial gains in the ongoing war.

Melnyk stated that Russia still does not control over 20% of the Donetsk region, highlighting the fluid and challenging situation in eastern Ukraine. According to The Financial Times, Russian forces aim for the complete capture of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, a goal that has led Moscow to amass troops in the east, raising alarms in Kyiv and among its international partners.

Projected Russian Military Losses

Andrii Melnyk also presented stark figures on Russian casualties, stating,

The bloody math is very simple: just multiply 6,000 sq km-the area of Donetsk-by 254, the number of occupiers who die for every captured square kilometer.

Applying this grim wartime logic, Melnyk concluded that for Russia to seize the entire Donetsk region through military force, Putin would have to send at least another 1.5 million soldiers to their deaths. When combined with current losses, the total number of Russian soldiers killed could exceed 3 million. This projection underscores the immense human cost Russia is incurring for marginal gains. The figure of 254 soldiers lost per square kilometer illustrates the fierce Ukrainian resistance and the high price of the invasion.

The emergency UN session underscores the international community's ongoing concern over Russia's aggression, particularly its push to seize Ukrainian territory in the east. Given the staggering projected losses for Russian forces, Moscow's military campaign is likely to face severe challenges ahead. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the critical need for collective support to uphold Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty in the face of this brutal war.

The alarming projections presented by Andrii Melnyk echo similar warnings from Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, who recently indicated that Russia could face casualty figures ranging from 300,000 to potentially a million in its ongoing Donbas offensive. This stark assessment reflects the escalating human cost of the conflict and highlights the urgent need for international attention.
