Electra Successfully Lands Hybrid Plane at Lower Manhattan’s Downtown Skyport

According to НВ — Техно: On October 27, American startup Electra made history by landing its hybrid aircraft on the Downtown Skyport helipad in Lower Manhattan, using only 45 meters of runway. This marks the first time an aircraft has touched down on a city helipad near Wall Street. The plane features a wing blown by electric propellers and is powered by a compact turbogenerator combined with a battery system. This innovation enables operations from small urban spaces rather than large traditional airports, significantly reducing travel time on regional routes.

Significant Time Savings on Key Routes

According to Electra’s calculations, flights from Manhattan to Boston could be shortened by nearly four hours using this aircraft. Travel time to Washington, D.C. may be cut by 3.5 hours, and trips to Philadelphia by about 45 minutes. Unlike conventional planes that require at least a kilometer of concrete runway, Electra’s aircraft can safely land on much shorter distances.

The EL2 prototype has already undergone testing at Atlantic City helipads and mountain resorts. Electra is participating in a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration experimental program designed to train pilots for challenging landing approaches. More than 60 airlines have expressed interest in adopting this technology.

Electra CEO Mark Allen stated, 'Over sixty airlines are already exploring this technology.'

Military forces are also considering the aircraft for rapid cargo delivery to areas inaccessible by standard transport or airfields.

This breakthrough has the potential to transform air travel, especially amid rising urban congestion. Operating compact planes from small city pads could streamline trips between major metropolitan areas, reduce travel times, and alleviate pressure on conventional airports. Successful deployment of such innovations may also influence future urban infrastructure and transportation planning.
