The War's Impact on Ukraine's Society and Economy

According to Главком: In a recent interview, Ella Libanova, Director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, outlined the severe socio-economic consequences of the full-scale war. She reported that the poverty rate in Ukraine has now reached 30%, a significant increase from the 20-23% level seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. Libanova stressed that the country's critical economic situation is currently being sustained only by external financial assistance, without which conditions would be far worse. This stark figure highlights the immense human cost of the ongoing conflict.

Persistent Unemployment and International Interest in Tech

Libanova also pointed to a persistent trend of stagnant unemployment within the country. She explained that this type of joblessness does not affect the entire population equally, but disproportionately impacts groups who cannot quickly retrain or are unwilling to adapt to change.

'This stagnant unemployment, you know, it doesn't spread across the entire population. There are more vulnerable population groups,' Ella Libanova

She added that 'people will have to change professions several times. This is a normal process.'

A notable part of the discussion focused on growing international interest in Ukrainian technological developments, particularly drones, from countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. This suggests a latent potential within the Ukrainian economy, even amidst the severe challenges wrought by war. However, Libanova emphasized that overcoming these economic hardships will require Ukraine to find new development paths and adapt to radically changed conditions. The nation's future economic health may depend on leveraging such innovative sectors while managing profound social dislocation.

The surge in poverty to 30% underscores the profound socio-economic challenges Ukraine faces. The issue of stagnant unemployment highlights the urgent need for workforce adaptation and professional flexibility. Despite these difficulties, the foreign interest in Ukrainian technology points to possible avenues for economic recovery and innovative growth, which will be crucial for the country's future trajectory.

As Ukraine grapples with a staggering poverty rate, the government is actively seeking solutions to bolster employment. A recent new employment policy has been approved, aiming to address the challenges faced by workers and businesses alike. This initiative could play a crucial role in alleviating the socio-economic strain highlighted by experts like Ella Libanova, emphasizing the need for adaptive strategies in these turbulent times.
