EU Steps Up Pressure on Russia

According to ХВИЛЯ: Kaja Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, announced in the European Parliament that the EU is preparing a new package of measures targeting the Russian economy and its shadow shipping fleet. She highlighted that existing sanctions have already cost Russia's economy around 1 trillion euros. The EU is now finalizing its largest-ever list of personal and corporate restrictions.

Kallas emphasized that EU naval forces are actively monitoring and addressing suspicious vessels linked to Russia's shadow fleet. Thanks to diplomatic efforts, hundreds of ships have been stripped of their flags as fewer countries are willing to register these tankers under their flags of convenience.

Stricter Travel Controls for Russians

The EU is also considering more severe travel limitations for Russian citizens within Europe. Kallas noted that Russia’s diplomatic presence in the EU has already been reduced, with the Russian delegation’s staff capped at 40 members. Hungary, for instance, has expelled 10 Russian diplomats. Discussions are underway about banning entry for Russian military personnel and veterans involved in the aggression against Ukraine, along with revisiting the issuance of tourist visas to Russian nationals.

“We can further tighten controls on Russian diplomats traveling within the Schengen area, prohibit visa issuance to Russian ex-combatants, and reconsider tourist visa policies for Russian citizens. It is essential to reduce the number of individuals capable of carrying out attacks on European soil,” Kallas stated.

In addition, the EU is intensifying efforts to dismantle Russian sabotage networks by expelling Russian diplomatic staff involved in harmful activities disguised as diplomatic work.

Discussions continue in Brussels on new initiatives, including blocking routes used to circumvent oil sanctions. The EU remains committed to deploying every possible measure to increase pressure on Russia amid its ongoing military aggression.
