EU plans to end temporary protection for Ukrainians from 2027: what will happen next

Ukrainians will lose temporary protection
Європейський Союз готується закрити програму тимчасового захисту для українців з 2027 року: які наслідки це матиме?

The temporary protection status for Ukrainians in the EU will remain in effect until early March 2027, introduced in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the spring of 2022. These measures are intended to be temporary and prepare for the conclusion.

The European Union has developed a plan for Ukrainian refugees from 2027, as reported by 'Khvylia' based on recommendations from the EU Council. The mechanism for gradually ending the temporary protection program involves an organized transition of people to permanent status in host countries or return to Ukraine.

Ukrainians who have successfully adapted in European countries will have the opportunity to obtain permanent residence documents that cover various types of permits.

Return to Ukraine should be phased and based on the willingness of individuals, providing assistance in adaptation at home through special projects.

Additional guarantees regarding residence in the EU are provided for Ukrainian families with children and groups of people with disabilities.

Special Unity Hubs are planned to be used for consulting refugees, along with cooperation between states through the establishment of working groups.

Ukrainian refugees in the EU can expect planned and systematic support for their adaptation and the opportunity to obtain permanent status or return home. This will allow them to have a clear path for the future and identify their next steps according to their own needs and wishes.
