EU Council Adds Iran's Revolutionary Guards to Terrorist List

According to Главком: The Council of the European Union has formally approved the designation of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This move follows a political agreement reached by EU foreign ministers and takes effect immediately upon its adoption. The listing subjects the IRGC to the EU's restrictive measures framework. This decision marks a significant hardening of the EU's stance towards Iran's most powerful security and military institution.

The restrictive measures applied to the IRGC include:

  • The freezing of any assets held within EU member states;
  • A prohibition on EU operators from making funds or economic resources available to the organization.

As part of this terrorist list update, sanctions were also extended to 13 individuals and 23 other groups and entities. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was established following the 1979 revolution and operates under the direct command of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

International Response and Rising Tensions

It is notable that the United States designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization back in 2019. Meanwhile, Israel's military and political leadership has placed all security services and civil defense on their highest state of alert. This precaution stems from intelligence indicating a potential large-scale U.S. strike on targets in Iran, which could occur in the coming days, and the possibility of retaliatory missile attacks by Tehran threatening Israeli cities.

The EU's listing of the IRGC underscores Iran's deepening international isolation.

This EU decision, coupled with the potential for imminent U.S. military action, risks a dangerous escalation of tensions in a region already plagued by conflict and political instability. The situation is highly volatile, with developments likely to have serious implications for global security and the foreign policies of the nations involved.
