EU Protection for Ukrainians Extended to 2027, European Commission Confirms
EU Reaffirms Protection for Ukrainian Men of Military Age
According to ХВИЛЯ: A European Commission spokesperson has refuted reports of potential changes to the temporary protection rules for Ukrainian men of conscription age within the EU. The European Union is not considering the return of such individuals who are currently under this protection. The established rules will see no amendments this year, and the approved regulations allowing Ukrainian refugees to reside in EU member states will remain in force at least until March 2027. This directive, enacted shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion, provides residence rights and access to social services.
Luxembourg's Defence Minister, Yuriko Backes, supported Interior Minister Léon Gloden's statement that Ukrainian men fit for military service should return home. However, as European Commission representative Markus Lammert clarified,
"Temporary protection is what we decided at the EU level and at the level of the member states until 2027."
Potential Policy Shift for Refugees in Norway
In a separate development, Norway plans to revoke protection for Ukrainian men, a move that could significantly impact those residing there. Norway is not an EU member but is part of the European single market and often aligns with EU policies.
This situation highlights the complex and sometimes divergent approaches to Ukrainian refugee policy in Europe, particularly concerning military obligations. While the EU confirms its commitment to continued support, individual nations may interpret or implement these common rules differently. Norway's intention to cancel temporary protection for conscription-age men could create new challenges for Ukrainian refugees within its borders.
